Keep smiling through

It’s no secret that this year has been unlike any other. We’ve worked hard to keep our residents safe and we’re grateful we’ve been able to achieve that. It’s thanks to the commitment from our staff, residents and their friends and family. We were blessed with warm and dry weather during late summer, and while [...]

Any requests?

The staff were so grateful to all the residents at Timberlog during lockdown. The clapping each week, lifted our spirits. One resident even created a poster for us each week to say thank you. It’s not been an easy time for us, but we’re all well, so we’re very grateful for that. We made use [...]

Riding out the storm

After a busy, but very enjoyable festive season, we’ve all been taking things a little more slowly at Timberlog. The stormy weather hasn’t helped us with our day trips, but we’ve still found things to do inside. Our regular weekend baking has continued, thanks to a resident’s daughter who comes in to Timberlog. The baking [...]

Home improvements at Octagon

Our dated conservatory was knocked down and has been replaced with a brick-built extension. It means we now have a lovely new lounge area, so the noise and dust were definitely worth it! The new lounge is just receiving some finishing touches, so we’re all looking forward to enjoying the new room soon. To escape [...]

Stepping into Christmas

This is always a lovely time of year at Timberlog. So many activities and visitors for us, and this year has been no exception. A band came in to play and residents from the Abbeyfield House in Billericay came along to enjoy the music too. We’ve already got a trip planned in the New Year [...]

Ted turns 100

In November, one of our residents, Ted, celebrated his 100th birthday. We had a small party at Octagon, which was hosted by his family and friends. It was quite overwhelming for Ted, as his brother, who he hasn’t seen for a few years, came along too. The wine and beer were flowing, and everyone, including [...]

Off to the jam factory

In October, we took a day trip to Tiptree Jam Factory. We were given a tour of the factory, which was really interesting. And after a look around the museum, we had lunch in the tea room. A very interesting and very delicious day. Yummy. As we said goodbye to the summer, our residents have [...]

Making music

Some lovely musicians came in to visit us, to play music and sing with the residents. There were tambourines and other instruments on offer. And with some of the bells being fitted to residents’ feet while they were sitting down, there were no excuses not to join in. Live music and singing are always real [...]

Scattergories anyone?

A number of studies have shown that playing board games keeps the brain active and can help reduce the risk of developing dementia. Board games require players to concentrate and think about their next moves, which keeps the brain engaged. We’re lucky to have Anne, a Friend of Abbeyfield, who has been visiting us regularly [...]

Thank you for the music

The Octagon residents took part in a wonderful music session the other week. A guitarist and a singer came in to entertain us. However, this duo weren’t the only ones performing. They brought in a selection of instruments so the residents could join in. They played a lot of 60s music so it really hit [...]
